Osaka Castle

Osaka Castle is widely known as an emblem of the power and fortune of Hideyoshi Toyotomi, a renowned war-lord who brought the whole country under his rule in the late 16th Century.  In 1583, Hideyoshi began construction at the former site of Honganji Temple and completed the magnificent castle, which was reputed as being unparalleled in the country.

Hideyoshi, having employed the castle as his stronghold, succeeded in quelling the wars which had continued for more than one century, thereby unifying the entire nation during the Azuchi-Momoyama period.

Hideyoshi Toyotomi commenced construction on the site of the Ikko-ikki temple of Ishiyama Hongan-ji. The design was modeled after Azuchi Castle, the headquarters of Oda Nobunaga. Toyotomi had grand visions to build a castle that mirrored Oda's, but surpassed it in every way: the plan featured a five-story main tower, with three extra stories underground, and gold leaf on the sides of the tower to impress visitors. In 1585 the Inner donjon was completed. Toyotomi continued to extend and expand the castle, making it more and more formidable to attackers. In 1597 construction was completed and Hideyoshi died. Osaka Castle passed to his son, Toyotomi Hideyori.

Hideyoshi Toyotomi was absolutely fascinated with gold. Accordingly, he ordered that gold be applied to furniture, weapons, armour, and furthermore, to the exterior of the main tower of Osaka Castle.  Hideyoshi collaborated with Rikyu Sen, who worked for Hideyoshi as a tea-ceremony master, and completed the construction of a golden tea room, in which not only the walls, the pillars and the ceiling, but also the tea utensils were finished with gold.

This historic and magnificent monument presides high over Osaka City, the commercial epicentre of Japan, and provides a spectacular vantage point with expansive views over Osaka Bay to the cultural capital of Japan, Kyoto.
